  • What is the starting salary?
    $39, 427 per year
  • How long will it take for a recruiter to contact me after I submit my applications?
    Correspondence usually takes anywhere from 1-5 business days.
  • How long does the entire hiring process take?
    The hiring process usually takes anywhere from 1.5 months to 2 months, but can vary. This is dependent upon the availability of the applicant and if all documentation is given in timely manner.
  • Do I need to have experience before I apply?
    No experience necessary!
  • Will I receive training before I start?
    Yes! A recruit will be in training for a total of 12 weeks with pay. The first 6 weeks consist of classroom training. The last 6 weeks will be hands on learning in the secure portion of the facility. Three of those weeks will be attending the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (SCCJA) in Columbia, South Carolina.
  • Do I need to attend SCCJA to start employment with SCDF if I am already certified with another agency?
    A recruit will not need to attend the SCCJA as long as the certification is up-to-date.
  • Do I need to attend SCCJA to start employment if I am certified with an out-of-state agency?
    Yes, a recruit will have to attend the SCCJA three week basic detention program.
  • What happens if I am under an employment contract with an agency, and want to transfer to SCDF for employment."
    If a recruit is under an employment contract with their agency, SCDF recommends completing the contract before applying with our facility. **Note: See Code of Laws Section 23-23-120: Reimbursement for Training Costs**
  • What does a typical work schedule look like?
    SCDF has four platoons; Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta. Once assigned to a shift, the hours will not change unless transferred to a new platoon. Alpha and Bravo are day shifts working from 6:30AM-7PM. Charlie and Delta are night shifts working from 6:30PM-7AM. A deputy will work a rotation schedule per month. A typical schedule for Alpha/Charlie is below.
  • How long is the probationary period?
    The probationary period is 6 months from start date.
  • Are there opportunities for advancement after the probationary period?
    After successful completion of probationary period and there is an opening, an employee can apply for a different position.
  • Is there a policy on personal appearance regarding tattoos, piercings, facial hair, and grooming?"
    For employment with SCDF, tattoos cannot be visible while wearing the uniform. This usually effects tattoos on the face, neck, and hand region. Arm/sleeve tattoos can be covered with the long sleeve uniform. Please contact recruiter if you have further questions. No facial piercings, facial hair (except for mustaches), or earrings are allowed while in uniform. Deputy must be neatly groomed to include no hair touching the uniform collar.
  • Do I have to work at SCDF to apply with Uniform Patrol?
    No, a recruit does not have to work at SCDF first to apply with Uniform Patrol. If a recruit starts employment with SCDF first, it is required that the recruit work 18 months before requesting a transfer to Uniform Patrol. If after a successful 18 months, and approved to transfer, the deputy will not need to complete all hiring steps for position.
  • Is there paid vacation and sick leave?
    Yes, an employee will earn 4.25 hours per month in the first year of employment. After the first year, an employee will earn 8.50 hours per month of vacation and sick leave. For more information on annual leave, please click here. For more information on sick leave, please click here.
  • Do I have to work holidays, and do I accrue any holiday time?"
    Yes, if shift is scheduled to work on a holiday, the employee on that shift will have to work. An employee will receive 12 hours for every county holiday whether worked or not. For more information on holiday policy, please click here.
  • What is the health insurance plan?
    South Carolina State Health Plan is through Blue Cross Blue Shield. Spartanburg County also offers a FREE Employee Health Clinic. For more information, please click here.
  • What does retirement look like for a detention deputy?
    A deputy will be eligible for the Police Officers Retirement System (PORS), and has the option to put funds into a 401(k). For more information, please click here.
